Fortanix announced that its technology is powering new applications of confidential computing.

Confidential computing protects applications and the sensitive data they process from unauthorized access and tampering at runtime, extending the security already in place for data at-rest and in-motion across the network.

Fortanix was the first company to deliver enterprise applications of confidential computing built on Intel SGX and today is the leader in enabling real-world uses of this technology.

The release of Ice Lake 3rd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors makes further, large-scale commercial applications of confidential computing possible.

Anti-money laundering and countering the financing of terrorism

Trillions of dollars in illicit transactions move through the global financial system every year, less than 1% of which is intercepted by authorities.

Consilient brings together next-generation technology and anti-money laundering and countering the financing of terrorism (AML/CFT) expertise to power a more secure, dynamic and effective solution for financial institutions.

Initial trials of Consilient’s Federated Machine Learning technology show massive improvements in efficiency and effectiveness over existing systems. “Machine learning models perform best when trained on the best data.

“However, an inability to share data hinders the financial services industry’s ability to make progress on improving the effectiveness of AML/CFT systems,” said Gary M. Shiffman, co-founder and CEO of Consilient and founder and CEO of Giant Oak.

“Consilient’s Dozer technology solves this challenge to collaboration by sharing algorithms and protecting data. Dozer pioneered Federated Machine Learning in the AML/CFT space. Fortanix enables Dozer to move between banks and other financial institutions securely, protecting sensitive data and models.”

Consilient is using Fortanix Confidential Computing Manager and servers enabled with Intel SGX technology.

Advancing AI for healthcare

Artificial Intelligence promises to fundamentally change healthcare, providing new tools to diagnose and guide treatment.

UC San Francisco’s Center for Digital Health Innovation (CDHI), in partnership with Fortanix, Intel, and Microsoft, has developed BeeKeeperAI, a secure platform that is now being used for machine learning against patient medical records.

“BeeKeeperAI has successfully validated the Massive Transfusion Algorithm on the Fortanix confidential computing platform utilizing SGX in the Azure cloud environment,” said Michael Blum, MD, associate vice chancellor for informatics, executive director of CDHI, and professor of medicine, UCSF.

“With Ice Lake, the BeeKeeperAI platform will be able to handle larger and more complex data sets for validating clinical-grade AI algorithms. In the weeks ahead we will be employing Ice Lake as we deploy our first customer’s algorithm against two distinct health system data sets, including data from UCSF.”

New healthcare case study

Fortanix is helping to streamline the clinical drug trial process as described by Intel in their case study “Intel Collaborates with Leidos and Fortanix to Accelerate Clinical Trials”, published April 6, 2021 in support of the announcement of Ice Lake.

In this solution, Fortanix orchestrates applications running in secure enclaves enabled by Intel SGX as well as encrypts and tokenizes sensitive data. Data remains protected at all times – at-rest, in-motion, and in-use. The complete case study is available in the Intel Newsroom.

Fortanix Confidential Computing Manager

These examples and others use the combination of Fortanix Confidential Computing Manager software and servers enabled with Intel Software Guard Extensions (SGX).

Fortanix Confidential Computing Manager enables “lift-and-shift” for applications to run inside Intel SGX enclaves without requiring any modification and provides complete enclave lifecycle management from creation to migration to termination.

The release of new Intel Ice Lake processors will now enable larger scale applications that leverage larger data sets.

“Fortanix was founded to solve cloud security and privacy and we had to pioneer a new type of security technology, Confidential Computing, to deliver on our vision.

“It’s exciting to see real-life breakthrough projects that make this a reality,” said Ambuj Kumar, Co-founder and CEO at Fortanix. “Even more exciting is that with continued innovation from Fortanix, Intel, and partners, this is only the beginning.”
